William Beam studied graphic design and painting at Newark School of Fine & Industrial Art, and attended Cooper Union in New York City.
He pursued his early design career at several firms in NJ and NYC. In 1970, William moved to Albuquerque, NM, then to Denver, CO to work
with Rowley-Kahler Design, and to Irvine, CA to work with Design West, before moving back to New Jersey in 1980 to manage his own design firm
for 20 years. In 2000, he was employed as a project designer at Metaphor, a pharmaceutical advertising agency for 9 years and retired to pursue
a career in fine arts.
Much of William's inspiration stems from the dynamic landscapes he experienced during his travels to Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, California and Arizona.
Although he has painted large, abstracted landscapes early on, he now takes a more intuitive approach to his paintings by building overlapping textures and glazes
to pull out images of light, darkness, reflections either from memory or imagination, reinterpretation of photos to create an iconic, sensual body of work.
William has exhibited his work in many juried exhibitions, including the Monmouth Museum, Lincroft, NJ, Visual Arts Center of New Jersey, Summit, NJ, Nabisco Brands Gallery, East Hanover, NJ, National Arts Club, New York, Foothills Art Center, Golden, CO, Montclair State University’s George Segal Gallery, The Center for Contemporary Art, Bedminster, NJ, The Art Alliance, Red Bank, and The Guild of Creative Art, Shrewsbury, NJ.
He has also been represented by art galleries in Lafayette, Ocean Grove, Asbury Park, and Boonton, NJ. William also has shown his work in the
Hilltop Country Day School Annual Art Exhibition in Sparta, NJ, where he was the Featured Artist in 2005.
